For a surf trip to Rio de Janeiro, the west zone — Recreio, Macumba, Prainha and Grumari — is usually the best base: the beaches are more consistent, less crowded and only minutes apart. The south zone makes sense if you want to combine surfing with city life in Ipanema and Copacabana, but it depends more on conditions and the line-ups are busier.
South zone vs west zone
South zone (Arpoador, Ipanema, Leblon): plenty of accommodation, restaurants and transport. The surf is good on south and southeast swells, but crowded, with little room for beginners.
West zone (Recreio, Macumba, Prainha): more waves, more space and preserved nature. The city centre is further away, which rarely matters if you came to surf.
Hostel, hotel or surf camp?
- Surf hostel: best value, shared spaces and people to surf with. Ideal for solo travellers.
- Hotel or suite: more privacy and quiet — good for couples and families.
- Surf camp: accommodation with lessons, equipment and a surf routine included — the easiest option for beginners.
What to check before booking
- The real distance to the water — walking beats driving every time
- Whether there is board storage; moving boards around the city is a hassle
- Lessons and equipment rental on site
- Early breakfast, so you don't miss the clean morning window
- Outdoor shower, drying line and space to rinse your gear
Longboard Paradise, at Praia da Macumba
We are a surf house with two units at Praia da Macumba, steps from the sand: the Surf Club, with hotel and hostel rooms and shared spaces, and the Suites, which are more private. On site you will find a restaurant and an ocean-view rooftop, board storage from R$120, surf lessons from R$140, yoga and massage.
In 2026 we were named the world's most sustainable hostel at the Hostelworld HOSCAR Eco Warrior awards — solar energy, restinga adoption and a coastal protection partnership with Osklen and Instituto-e.
